The Kenya Association of Pediatric Surgery successfully hosted its second pediatric laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery training at the National Referral Hospital from 9–13 October 2023.
A total of 21 participants—both residents and consultants—engaged in a comprehensive program led by Prof. Ashwin Pimpalwar, focusing on modern minimally invasive surgical techniques for children.
The workshop featured:

• 2 days of didactic lectures and hands-on dry-lab simulation
• 3 days of live surgeries on 9 pediatric patients

This training strengthens capacity for safer surgeries, faster recovery, and improved outcomes for young patients across Kenya and the region.

This initiative is a stepping stone toward a future Pan-African pediatric minimally invasive surgery program, supported by ongoing partnerships with medical technology leaders such as Karl Storz and Olympus Corporation.
