KISUMU CAMP 2025

The Kenya Association of Pediatric Surgeons (KAPS) held a successful pediatric surgical camp from September 29 to October 1, 2025, delivering free surgical care to 103 children in Western Kenya. Hosted by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) and Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) Kisumu, the camp involved 76 medical professionalsfrom various Kenyan institutions, including 20 pediatric surgeons, 8 pediatric surgery residents, a 24-member nursing team comprised of pediatric theater nurses and theater technicians, and a 24-member anesthesia team comprised of anesthesiologists, anesthesiology fellows, residents, and theater assistants . A total of 116 procedures addressed 108 diagnoses, primarily inguinal hernias and umbilical pathologies, alongside complex cases like omphalocele and redo surgeries.

The camp fostered significant skill-sharing and local collaboration, with no major postoperative complications, except for two children requiring ICU care.
